Reflections on “Afterglow”

I choose to write a piece for Emma Rush, on the painting “Afterglow” by William Blair Bruce.

His painting immediately evoked strong emotions of my childhood. I grew up with a similar scena- rio in the backyard of my family house in Nova Scotia. Though this work was painted in Sweden, I have seen a parallel picture, so many times in Nova Scotia, when the ice of the Minas Basin, mixes with the layered colours of the sky.

Combining this scene with an excerpt of a piece by Marin Marais (1656 –1728), “Les Voix Hu- maines” (für Viola und Basso continuo), I wrote “Reflections of “Afterglow”, attempting to retain simplicity, harmony mixed with the uncertainty of nature.
